If they weren't such a spectacular sight you might get bored of sparkling golden domes whilst in Kyiv. The reason that those of St. Michael's Monastery seem to gleam particularly brightly is because they were freshly reconstructed during 1997-1999, along with the rest of the building, after it was destroyed by the Soviets in 1934. Whilst we're on the subject of Commies and their evil ways, pay your respects to the victims of the Great Famine at the memorial by the Monastery's entrance. Seven million Ukrainians died in 1932-33 thanks to the collective farming policies enforced by Stalin, in what was the country's worst tragedy.
