The hard-to-find, unmarked door of Viola's Bierstube does a good job of keeping the unworthy from spoiling this rather cool nightspot. Once you've located the hidden threshold, open it and head down the stairs to find yourself immersed in a convivial basement bar atmosphere. Surrounded by bare-brick walls you'll discover a mix of young Kyivans and savvy expats sipping beers and jostling for the limited seating opportunities. If you get peckish some of Kiev's tastier bar snacks mean you don't have to head into the wintry night for nourishment. Worth knowing too is that Viola's husband Eric runs a similar joint, called - rather unsurprisingly - Eric's Bierstube!
