Chernobyl to Open for Tourists

The site of the world’s worst nuclear disaster, Chernobyl will officially open for tourists in 2011. In 1986 a nuclear reactor exploded at the Chernobyl power plant, subjecting the plant’s employees and those living in the area nearby to lethal doses of radiation. Hundreds of thousands were resettled from the vast contaminated area.

Special permission will still be required to enter the zone, and tourists will only be allowed to enter with guides. However, Ukraine has declared the area safe for tourists, saying there is no health risk for stays of even up to four or five days.

The town of Chernobyl, located just over 100 kilometers north of Kiev, will be open for visitors - including the nuclear plant itself.
